Food Nutrition with food Pyramid Method /_\

Federal authorities announced Thursday a new icon to replace the food pyramid as a tool for teaching Americans about good nutrition.

The new symbol, called MyPlate plate is divided into food groups, suggesting that people are divided to eating fruits and vegetables for half of their meals with the other half of the grains and protein.

The symbol of the plate replaces the food pyramid, which began in 1992 and 2005 has been revised and MyPyramid, which contain a ladder to symbolize the need for physical movement.

GP to understand the pyramid often derided as confusing and difficult for Americans. The new symbol is easier to understand and easier.

"I like a lot," said Nancy Betz, director of Nutritional Sciences at Oklahoma State University. "I think it's much easier to understand the pyramid."

The table includes the concept of portion control size, which has become a problem in the past 10 years.

Substitute the word "bread" with the "grain" and "protein" rather than "meat." Fats are totally absent from the board products and dairy products come with a small circle in the canopy.

The new symbol next few months after the U.S. Department of Agriculture released the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans to eat less, people generally recommended to avoid the increased consumption of fruits and vegetables and empty calories.

MyPlate emphasizes consumption of fruits and vegetables, an area in which Oklahoma will improve overall. Less than 15 percent of adults said in the report that the consumption of five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day, according to 2009 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

More than 67 percent of adults in the country are overweight or obese, according to CDC.

Sandy Richardson, professor assistant dietitian and nutrition at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City have agreed that the new symbol will be easier to follow for Americans.

"You can see at a glance what to see," he said.

Also useful for children starting to learn about nutrition, "said Richardson.

"Hopefully this will translate into better performance," he said.
