Cowboys fans can dream all they want, but Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins likely will be back as the team's starting cornerbacks with Orlando Scandrick as the nickel back. The Cowboys have $10 million tied up in Newman and $1.5 million in Jenkins, both former first-round picks.
There had been speculation that the Cowboys might make a play for Nnamdi Asomugha, the top free agent on the market and arguably the league's top cornerback. But executive vice president Stephen Jones answered "yes" when asked if he liked his cornerbacks.Newman, who turns 33 before the season, played through a rib injury last season when he allowed 58 receptions for 871 yards and three touchdowns. Jenkins allowed 54 receptions for 935 yards and five touchdowns. Newman would save $8 million if he is released, but the Cowboys believe his rib injury played into his poor 2010 season. Both he and Jenkins had Pro Bowl seasons in 2009, and the Cowboys expect Jenkins to rebound from a subpar sophomore season.
