Mexico waits for the second consecutive year, the Gold Cup title took a hit Thursday - and had nothing to do with what happened on the ground in Charlotte, North Carolina, where the Tri dismantled Cuba, 5-0, two goals each one of Giovani Dos Santos and Javier Hernandez and the other by Aldo De Nigris, becoming the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Hours before the game, Mexico has suspended five players, including starting goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, after testing positive for banned anabolic agent clenbuterol.
The General Secretary Chuck Blazer said the national committee of the Confederation teams will meet Friday to discuss the situation, including the possibility that Mexico will be allowed to replace suspended players file in Gold Cup
In addition to Ochoa, the defenders of Edgar Dueñas, Francisco Rodriguez, and midfielders Christian Bermúdez and Antonio Naelson "Sinha" has also been suspended, the prohibitions that could last up to two years. Of the five, only Rodriguez and Ochoa played in Mexico in the tournament opening 5-0 win over El Salvador on Sunday.
Decio de Maria, secretary general of the Mexican Federation (Femexfut), in a press conference in Cancun players failed a test before the tournament last month after eating contaminated food. Mary said that no test results were released to the Mexican federation until Wednesday.
"Everything indicates it was an accident, very unfortunate," said De Maria. The five positive results were included in a package of 14 test trials. Officials said the Mexican players in training camp have all ate the same food, without clearly explaining why only five positive results.
Clenbuterol, known as "Clen" can be useful in the treatment of asthma, but is commonly used by athletes and bodybuilders to promote fat loss. It is the same drug that produces positive results in the Tour de France Alberto Contador last year.
U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said clenbuterol was also used to promote growth of livestock, including cows, sheep, poultry and pigs, although such use is illegal in the United States and Europe, and the risk of a positive doping control consumption meat contaminated with clenbuterol is low.
But in April, the German anti-doping athletes warned NOTHING on the consumption of products from Mexico because it could lead to inadvertent positive doping results.
Mexico has had problems with the Germans, but occasionally found FEMEXFUT used as part of his defense against doping charges.
"We know there's a health alert across the country because of food contaminated with clenbuterol and taken into account in the investigation," said De Maria.
On Thursday other Group A, Randall Brenes scored with seconds to delay the time to give Costa Rica a 1-1 draw with El Salvador, almost guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals.
Rodolfo Zelaya scored seconds before the end of regulation time in the first half of a victory in El Salvador.
Costa Rica advanced to the next round with a win or a draw against Mexico in the final match of group play on Sunday.
